Deciding what sofa to choose when you have kids, animals ,and family gathers often it can seem impossible to know what sofa will work best. 

As a mom myself, home stylist, a pet owner and someone who often hosts dinner with family I have some great sofas I have tried and they are all affordable. 

In this article I will go through all my favourites, my top favourite affordable sofa that has lasted my family almost 8 years and still looks great. 

We will also go through a some to stay clear of and why they aren't the best for a family.

Here are the best affordable sofas for families.

Before we get into my list I wanted to go through a few things to consider when purchasing a new sofa when you have a family. 

      Material: This is an important one. choosing a fabric that works in your house hold. My recommendations are stick to cotton, polyester, performance fabric are great if you can afford the extra cost and linens work well with kids just not great for pets as they snag easily. 

Stay away from anything with a weave fabric they tend to snag and some polyester fabric mixed with canvas or other materials can pill over time which isn't great either. 

A microfiber fabric is great with pets and kids and if available is a great affordable option next to performance fabrics that can me more costly. 

    Colour:  When choosing a colour for your sofa I would stay away from light tones unless you are buying a performance fabric, they aren't  great with kids or pets and even the colour form your clothes and just sitting on it. 

I would go with a mid tone colour grey, beige, tan  are all great options, and don't show wear as much as some of the lighter colour can. 

First on the list of best affordable family sofas is the OWEN SOFA from structube.

I used this sofa a few times for home staging, one of my clients love it and ended up purchasing the sofa from me.

Things I loved about if right off the bat, 

• I came built, what? all you have to do is screw on legs. 
• back cushions are removable, seat cushions attached with velcro can come off. 
• It's so light weight, easy to move around but still sturdy. 
• cushions are soft but firm 
• The Price This sofa is $899 and it is currently on sale for $649. 

I am happy to report that this sofa has held up so well for the past 2 years. Spot cleans easily, fabric looks great hasn't worn or pilled, pet hair wipes off easy and it get even comfier with time. 

The not so great things

• The cushions are more on the thin side so this isn't the perfect sofa for kids jumping on. However for the price if it looks great and keeps it shape for 3 or 4 years I think that's good and maybe a house rule no jumping on the sofa.
•  only comes in two colours light grey and dark grey 
• It's a shallow sofa not to deep so not as good for putting you feet up.

Even with the few not so great things this is still a great affordable sofa for any family and why its number 5 on my list. 

With it coming built, great easy clean fabric and velcro cushions it just makes a great choice. Its perfect for smaller spaces and its price point can't be beat. 

Next up and coming in a number 3 is The uppland sofa from ikea.

This is a wonderful sofa with its rolled arms and more traditional style, its so affordable great for homes with kids who like to jump around, so incredibly comfortable and perfect for naps.

Things I love

• Its thick comfy cushions 
• traditional classic shape really goes with any design style 
• lots of colour options Also there are companies that make custom ikea sofa covers. 
• everything comes off so can be washed and has a 10,000 wash time guarantee. 
• very affordable at just under $1000 
• ikea has a 365 day return policy so you can try it for a bit and if its not right you can return easily. 
• Ikea also buys old sofas and furniture so they can donate or reuse helping the environment. 
• you can purchase a new cover if needed things that aren't so good 

• The fabric Its good with kids and washes well but has a tendency to snag which is frustrating. 
• pet hair get stick in the basket weave fabric making it tricky to clean. 

For the most part this is a great sofa, the fabric selection is a little hard cause its like a basket weave canvas so not great for pets, and snags easy.

however its a great price very comfortable and if you love the shape like I do I would invest in a a company that makes custom fabric. you can even get performance fabric as well for additional cost however most covers on the sites are range from $250 to $400 so not to bad. 

You could easily do this later if the fabric that comes with the sofa doesn't hold up so I still think this is a great affordable sofa for families. 

Here at number 2 is the Finalla

This a great one and why its number two on my list. I haven't had this for two long but I do really love it. Its also few a lot deeper than it is a slants abit making it very comfortable.

Things I love

• It's firm but comfortable, back cushions so soft and hug your back 
• The fabric, polyester fabric blend gives it a wool like feel so nice and doesn't pill or snag. Please note they do have the weave fabric so proceed with caution that one snags.
• Its ikea so price is great 3 seater is $1339
• comes in 6 colours 
• you can customize it. two seater you can turn into a sectional. I have a 3 seater but would like it to be an L shape sectional I can buy all the pieces I need seperatly too. 
• This is an easy sofa to make look custom, you can buy the sectional add extra seating purchase a proformance fabric from Etsy, Bemz or custom works and can have a custom sofa for less than $5000.
• cushions hold their shape. 
• slim armrests I love the modern feel of them 
• perfect fort building sofa my daughter loves building forts out of our sofa and this one is great and comes in second.

Things I don't love

• The bottom cushions move around abit but I think that can be fixed with some velcro but honestly doesn't bother me that much.
• Not a fan of the woven fabric it snags it only comes in the dark beige and dark grey but my personal opinion not the greatest fabric for a busy home.
• The height of the armrest, I find it abit awkwardly high but maybe that's just me. And definitely not a deal breaker but to me I wish it was a little lower.
• more colour options. I wish they had more options in there polyester wool like fabric I love it! I would love a tan options because the beige is quite light when you have kids and pets.

Finalla sofa

The FINALLA sofa from IKea is the most customizable. you can choose between a few fabrics , two seater, three seater and a L shape sectional. You can add pieces to each sofa making them larger and the possibilities are endless. They also come in sleeper sofas so great for small spaces when you need a sleep spot for guests. 

Overall this is a great one and just might take over the #1 spot however I haven't used it enough yet so I can't say for sure, but I will definitely keep this updated. 

I think my favourite thing about this sofa is that you can customize it to you space and an affordable price point too. 

If you move you don't need to buy a new sofa you can just customize the shape and colour if needed. 

Its sleeker design, is great for smaller spaces but doesn't lack on comfort and cushion size. I feel you sink into this sofa abit more making it feel larger than it is, but keep in mind I am 5'1 so if you are tall you may need to test it out or give my #1 a try. 

Finally the number one spot goes too the KIVIK sofa

Again from ikea, guys im sorry but ikea sofas are just so good and the price point really can't be beat. 

With lots of options and the fact that you can buy a custom cover at an affordable price as well, it just makes it the best affordable sofas with families.

Things that I love and why it's #1

• Its wide seat cushions make it so comfy to lounge on 
• low wide armrest make the end seats so comfortable
• its medium firm, so the cushions hold their shape
• washable covers 
• price you can get a two seater with lounger for $1499, note I bought mine over 8 years ago and I paid $899 so the price has gone up but still so affordable.
• you can switch the lounger to either side and you can add seating making this customizable to your space. 
• Love the mid-tone grey fabric it has a soft herringbone pattern but the fabric holds up so I probably washed min 1000 times.
• comes in 5 colours and different fabrics plus it comes in leather as well for $2,500
• perfect fort building sofa, if you have some crazy kids that like to run a jump on the sofa build forts this the perfect one it has held up so well, all the cushions need is a little fluff at times.
• The lounger is so comfortable if you are a napper or have kids that like to cozy up on the sofa its the perfect spot. And it works well to change your babies too!

Things that aren't great

• Its wide and boxy now its not a big deal but the designer in me doesn't love that cause sometimes I feel it looks to heavy in a space.
• Not great in smaller spaces it takes up a lot of room
• I love the low arms but I find them to boxy but they are comfortable.
• Its low and everything get stuck under there, and its not and easy sofa to move because its heavy and bulky.
•  comes in so many pieces to build ahhhhhhhh 

Even with the few things that aren't great this is still my number one affordable sofa for families, mostly because it holds up so well, I don't have to worry about the kiddos jumping on it, I can wash it and customize it if needed. 

I did replace the mid tone grey cover last year so it lasted about 7 years but started to too a little rough it cost under $300 to get a whole new cover from ikea. I would have went with comfort works but the wait time was to long and I needed for when we sold our home.

I wouldn't recommend the light grey fabric although it has held up well I do find it discolours where we seat and looks warn. 

I will be using this in a bonus room at the new house and do have plans tp get a performance fabric from comfort works when we move. 

All in all this sofa has survived 2 moves, kids jumping it, it's been puked on, peed on, laid  on, dug at by dogs, and with stood multiple family gatherings and it still looks fabulous. Highly recommend this sofa.
