Throw Pillows
We all love throw pillows on our sofa or chairs. Well if you have kids they probably spend more time on the floor than the couch lol. However, when styling a home I think they are a must they can add pops of colour, texture, and they break up the sofa colour so it more pleasing to the eye.
Let's start with inserts I have two that I love but one of them in my opinion is indestructible when it comes to kids.
First off let me just say when choosing home decor for your home keep how the kids will respond to it in mind this way it allows you to have a nicely styled home but the decor items now become something the kids can play with as well.
I do feel its best to buy cover and insert separately, I'm sorry Walmart and HomeSense pillows just don't make the cut here.
Inserts First we have the FJADRAR inner cushion from IKEA they come in a few different sizes and price ranges from $12 to $22 cad.
These are feather inserts still not to sure how I feel about feathers but these are great because even when the kids play of lie on them they are really easy to fluff back up again.
cons They need to be fluffed up and feathers do fall out.
Secondly we have my favourite these inserts are from amazon and will forever have my heart. Best kid- friendly insert
They hold up so well I have tried so many inserts and these when it comes to kids and a busy house hold are the best in my opinion. I have had mine for almost 2 years and they still look as good as the day I bought them.
Ikea feather insert
In these pictures I had my daughter demonstrate just how well this pillows hold up. I have washed them and they came out perfectly fine however I would proceed with caution and didn't put them in the dryer to be safe.
You can head over to my instagram to watch the video demonstration in my highlights under kid- friendly home decor.

Con the only con I have with these is they don't give you that perfect pillow chop. They do a little but the mircogel fiber is to fluffy so doesn't allow you to get a perfect chop like feather inserts do.
Pillow on the left is amazon with down alternative filling, and to the right is IKEA down filled. Definitely get a better chop with the feathers but I really do think both are great options.
covers I have a few options here and they are all great however I do have a favourite so let's start with that.
The covers are from Marigold interiors this is a small business and I do believe she makes them herself. They are so well made they can with stand jumping, my kid sleeps on them and the dogs dig and they still look how they did when I bought them a year ago.
Easy to wash I put on cold delicate cycle and lye flat to dry.
They come in many patterns and textures as well. The only con is they are a bit on the pricy side however, they last and in my opinion you are getting your money's worth cause the quality is great.
With many styles and patterns to choose from you can easily mix a few into your existing home decor.
My second favourite covers Are from Ikea these SANELA cushion covers are fantastic. The fabric is thick and great quality they are made of cotton velvet so soft. They wash well and they don't attract pet hair like some materials can.
Price is $9.99 cad and they come in 3 different sizes and 6 colours add the insert and you have a throw pillow for under $30 which is a steal.
2. Loloi Rugs
Hands down my favourite rugs to have with kids and pets. Now I love all lololi rugs however the best kid- friendly ones are their printed rugs.
They are thin but thick enough to be so cozy under the feet. Smooth and soft as well. These clean so easily and with their vintage inspired prints makes them so great to hide dirt and mess.
The perfect soft rug to have with babies crawling. Also great for a babies room because they are printed this means no little fibres they can pick at and put in their mouths.
This rug cleans easly with a steam cleaner or bring them out side add some gentle soap and spray down with the hose.
Loloi rugs are a must have in a busy houses hold with kids.
My runner in my entryway is almost two years old and and looks brand new. I have cleaned it and the print still looks great.
In my powder bath I have the loloi printed rug by amber interiors this has held up well and I just love the vintage inspired pattern.

3. Baskets
This is probably a given but baskets are your best friend in a kid- friendly space. They hide clutter, toys and it makes it easy for your kids to tidy up if they have a designated basket to put their toys in.
Baskets also provide texture and colour to a space and are great to warm up a room so they act as decor pieces and great as storage.
Try baskets like these they are warm in tone and match any design style. The lid acts as a decorative feature and helps to hide all the toys inside.
Tips Add a basket to each room in the house front entry, dining room, and living room. If you have more than one child I would have a basket for each child at least in one room of the house.
Baskets are from HomeSense probably one of the best places to get affordable baskets. Here is another great option for baskets Shop here
4. Ottomans
Swap out your wood or glass coffee table for an ottoman. These are great to have with kids again not only do they look nice in your space kids can jump on them use them to make forts pull closer to the sofa to put their feet up as well.
With kids I would recommend a leather or faux leather ottoman. I would even look for ones that open that have added storage for toys as well.
You can put a tray on top when hosting or when watching movies and need a place for snacks and drinks.
The leather wipes clean or if you like a fabric option you can opt for a proformance fabric or scotch guard yourself to help with any stains.

5. Poofs
Poofs are great to have in the living room kids can easily move them around.
They are great to move them close to the Coffee table ottoman and act like a chair for colouring or snack time while they watch a show or play a board game.
6. Sideboard
Instead of a tv stand and colourful kid organizers try a sideboard or dresser. Now built ins are great but not aways in our budget.
Sideboards are great to store kids toys, crafts, video games, and even baby supplies like diapers and wipes that you don't want to leave out.
Units like this just look so much better in your space than coloured kids stands and it's so much easier to find something that matches your design style.
Tip for keeping things more organized. Buy bins mark on them each Childs name or assign a colour for little ones that can't read yet everyone gets bins for their toys.
When they are finished playing everything can go back into bins and placed into the unit and hidden away.
Things can get messy at times but just need to be reorganized once a month. This is a great way for kids to enjoy the space and for mom and dad to enjoy it at the end of the night and not have to look at toys.
This will also help make it easy for kids to clean and organize their toys and a lot better too.
7. Acrylic vases and stems
Acrylic vases or vessels are perfect for kids. The aren't breakable like glass or heavy like ceramics.
The best part is they a super affordable and you can DIY them to any colour or style you want.
Stems
I love real stems better than faux flowers or faux stems when you have kids. I do find my daughter picks the leaves off so for the vases you have where they can reach I opt for real stems just go cut some off a tree in you backyard or find some branches on your evening walk.
Living in Canada it's a little harder in the winter so faux stems work just go with inexpensive ones just incase the kids get at them.

8. Blankets
Lastly, Throw blankets. Who doesn't love a few good throws draped over the sofa or an arm of a chair.
For me they are definitely a must when decorating a space they add texture colour and another layer in the space that really helps with that cozy feeling we all try to achieve.
Throw is from homeSense I found a similar style here
When choosing a throw for your kid-friendly space, stay away from anything knitted, or woven, anything with fringe or tassels on the ends.
Kids for some reason are obsessed with picking at blankets like this. My daughter is almost 10 and knows better but still finds that piece of string and pulls on it ugh the struggle.
Below are 3 great options for throws the whole family can enjoy. They wash well, extra large for family snuggling, and are great for fort making.
This is why I believe adding things around your home that kids love to play with and you don't really have to worry about makes it so much less stressful for everyone.
we all need to love our home!

9. Benches
Every house with kids should have a bench at the kitchen or dining table. Wood benches are great for kid's. A built in banquet makes it easy for kids to get in and out and you don't have to worry about stains because wood is easy to wipe.
An added bonus for parents is you can have some fabric chairs or something nicer but designate the bench for the kids.
It's things like this that make it easier for both kids and parents to have the design they want.
